NEW YORK, NY – Copenhagen has become a global food Mecca, and this year’s Michelin Guide Rouge shows nothing less.

A record high of 15 stars was awarded today by the acclaimed French foodies guide, giving travelers direction some of Europe’s best restaurants. This high number of Michelin Stars showcases Copenhagen as a city able to offer a very wide range of gourmet food experiences.

Rebecca Burr from The Michelin Guide Rouge told Danish newspaper, Politiken, on March 10:
“When I think back to some of my early visits (to Copenhagen), I was blown away by the standard. I think that the Michelin guide was among the first to realize how high the standard was there. But it didn't have such good everyday places. Now people who buy the guide can spend a couple of days in Copenhagen and visit a much larger range of good places, bistros and brasseries and gourmet restaurants…”

New Copenhagen Restaurants Stars to Shine

Today, Restaurant Kadeau, received their first Michelin star. The restaurant was founded in Bornholm; a small island popular as a tourist destination in summer and famous for its great produce. The founders are from Bornholm, and the original restaurant lies scenically over the dunes of the southern part of the island. In 2011 they moved to Copenhagen to open a Copenhagen version of Kadeau, with the restaurant still having Bornholm on every plate.

This year’s guide also reveals news for restaurant Geranium, which receives a second star. At Geranium the cuisine is all organic with some of the most sharp, precise and gorgeous food you can find. Chef Rasmus Kofoed has won the bronze, silver and gold Bocuse statue for his sublime craftsmanship; the most winning competition chef ever.

Copenhagen – Good Value for Money

The Michelin Guide is not only about the stars, it also awards the Bib Gourmand, a special category for great restaurants which are more affordable offering particularly good value for money. This year, Copenhagen’s restaurants were awarded a total of 13 Bib Gourmands, compared to 12 in the last edition.

In restaurants such as Marv & Ben (means ‘Marrow and Bone’) and Søren K (named after famous Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard), you can sample New Nordic cuisine without having to reach for your gold card. A number of the Bib Gourmand awarded restaurants have chefs who have previously worked at noma.
Former noma sommelier, Anders Selmer, is behind the restaurant Kødbyens Fiskebar in Meat Packing District where he serves elegant, modern fish and seafood dishes in the funky, post-industrial setting of a former butcher's wholesale. Meanwhile, Restaurant Orangeriet is a more classically-orientated restaurant, serving refined Franco-Danish food. New to receive a Bib Gourmand is brasserie style restaurant Retour. Behind Retour is the much talented Copenhagen food entrepreneur Rasmus Oubæk.
