Christmas in Den Gamle By - The Old Town Museum
Christmas in the Old Town
In Den Gamle By (the Old Town Museum) you can experience the history of Christmas through more than four centuries. Tables are set and it is beautifully decorated everywhere in the same way that it was done from the 17th century right up to 1974. In Den Gamle By you can also find a unique selection of gifts in the period shops or at the stalls, and you can take a break to enjoy traditional Danish Christmas food, sweets, goodies, and hot drinks.
20 November to 18 December, 3 pm to 9 pm
As a brand new feature, Christmas visitors in Den Gamle By are invited to our Friday Christmas events.
- Christmas elves at the Mintmaster's Mansion
- Every Friday leading up to Christmas you can buy Christmas rice pudding from the elves, and, in olden day-traditional style, the whole family can eat from a communal bowl. The Hele Historien ('Whole Story') theatre company provides the pudding, the story, the pranks, and the Christmassy atmosphere at the Mintmaster's Mansion.
- The Elf Elder, actor Jens Zacho Boye, will be seated in the great chair in the Tapestry Hall where he will tell the story of his long and varied life as an elf, and the children can give him their Christmas lists.
- Friday Christmas in Den Gamle By also boasts:
▪ Friday jazz at Jazzbar Bent J (5-8 pm)
▪ Christmas in the main square with stalls selling food and drink, gifts and goodies
▪ Free guided tours through the history of Christmas (duration approx. 25 mins)
▪ Fire show in the main square
▪ Indoor handicrafts market
▪ Christmas bazaar in Bendtsens Warehouse with coffee and Christmas cookies
▪ Den Gamle By period shops all open for business
▪ 1927 and 1974 brought to life by actors
Christmas fun house for the whole family
14 November 2015 to 3 January 2016
Visit the elves in the loft and the hall all wonderfully decorated with a big Christmas tree and presents. Look inside the children's playroom where you can smell Christmas smells, play, climb, and listen to stories in the cosy den.
Strolling around, our visitors will have plenty opportunity to make up their minds whether they believe in Christmas elves and simply love the season, or perhaps they feel a little less Christmassy. The latter, however unlikely, is still a possibility!
Christmas market with lots of original gift ideas
The market stalls, the handicrafts market, og and the period shops are adventures in themselves and great inspirations for more out of the ordinary Christmas shopping. Here you will find things you won't find anywhere else.
You can buy anything from toys, books, the Danish-traditional Madam Blå coffeepot, wonderful posters, homemade jewellery, scrumptious cakes, and homemade schnapps. And in the Bernstorff market garden you can buy flowers and plants, apples and nuts, herbs and decorations for Christmas.
The history of Christmas – a mosaic
14 November 2015 to 3 January 2016
The history of Christmas during the period from the Renaissance to the beginning of the 20th century remains, of course, the focus of the exhibitions on display in the Den Gamle By's historical houses. The Christmas exhibition is a cavalcade covering the period from the Renaissance drawing room of the prosperous merchant in 1625, and the 19th century living rooms with the first Christmas trees, through to the modern family in 1929 decorating their home with both an Advent wreath and a Christmas tree adorned with tinsel and electric lights. The 1974 town district is, of course, also in Christmas attire with decorations that most Danes still remember today.
Christmas party for children and adults
Christmas parties in 18th century Denmark were cosy gatherings where ample amounts of Christmas brew were consumed, ballads were sung , and Christmas games were played. The Danish traditional children's singing game "Bro Bro Brille" was one such Christmas game. Other Christmas games had a rather erotic strain, for which reason the Christmas parties were a thorn in the side for the Church.
In Den Gamle By living history museum, you can join in at a Danish 18th century Christmas party. A friendly atmosphere, warmth, and you can buy 'Bispebolle' hot punch, fruit juice, Christmas crullers, gingerbread hearts and many other niceties. You can also enjoy your own food and drink.
You can also find inspiration for Christmas presents in one of ‘Den Gamle By’ many historical shops.
So everything is ready for you to enjoy the real spirit of Christmas in the light from the oil lamps with delicious samples of Christmas goodies – just like your great-grandmother made them.
