Donizetti’s opera »L’Elisir d’Amore«
»L’Elisir d’Amore« in Marstal
On Saturday 29 June at 8 pm and on Sunday 30 June at 3 pm the Royal Danish Opera will perform Gaetano Donizetti’s
opera »L’elisir d’amore« in Ebbe’sBoatyard.
For the past four years the hall of the shipyard has proved to have an extraordinarily fine acoustics for opera performances, so
singers and musicians alike look forward to celebrating the five-year anniversary of opera in Marstal. »L’elisir d’amore« is among the favourites of the 19th century comic operas, obviously due to the combination of good music and a funny story. The maid Adina is reading the legend of Tristan and Isolde who fell in love because
of a magic potion. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but he is far too shy to tell her, so he wishes just such a magic potion. Adina,
however, prefers the courting of sergeant Belcore. Help, however, is coming to Nemorino, when the quack doctor Dulcimara arrives and sells his bottled cure-allto the townspeople. Nemorino buys a love potion, which according to Dulcimara will take
effect within 24 hours. Emboldened by the elixir, Nemorino feigns indifference when he encounters Adina. She becomes increasingly annoyed so whenBelcore returns and proposes marriage to Adina, she accepts. This of course panics Nemorino, who is
forced to find money for another bottle. This he can do by joining the army. In the meantime gossip has itthat Nemorino’s uncle has
died and left him a fortune. Hoping to share his fortune, the women approach Nemorino with overly friendly greetings. Nemorino
thinks it is the potion, and when Adina sees Nemorino with the women, she is rattled by his newfound popularity and realises that she has loved Nemorino all along. She purchases back his military contract, and Belcore takes the news in his stride, noting that
there are plenty of other women in the world. Dulcamara boasts of the success of his elixir and exults in the boost this will bring to the sales of his product. As he prepares to leave, everyone queues up to buy the elixir and hails Dulcamara as a great physician. The soloists atthe performances are Niels Jørgen Riis, Sophie Elkjær, Anders Jakobsson, Ingeborg Børch and Guido Paevatalu who also stages and directs the opera. The music is performed by a quintet, arranged and conducted by Svenn Skipper.
