The house was built in 1828 by Laurits Hoem, who was schoolmaster in Skagen Vesterby.
The poet, writer and painter Holger Drachmann(1846- 1908), who had been a frequent visitor to Skagen, bought the house in 1902, and added the large atelier.
The house was named Villa Pax, and Holger Drachmann spent the last years of his life here, surrounded by the many paintings which may still be seen in the building.
In 1911, Villa Pax was opened to the public as a memorial to Holger Drachmann.
