The Engelsholm renaissance castle is beautifully situated on the shores of Engelsholm Lake, surrounded by forest and park. Today, the castle is a folk school, which is owned by the private institution “Engelsholm Højskole”. The castle was opened in 1593 and the tender start of the park was in all likelihood laid out by Knud Brahe in the following years as an herb and rose garden.
Since then, the garden has been nurtured and in 1737 was rearranged by Gerhard de Lichtenberg as a baroque garden with symmetrical beds, lawns and ponds, trimmed bushes and trees and shifting terrain with banks and stairs. In the late seventeenth century, the area closest to the castle was rearranged according to a more scenic style following the directions of H.A. Flindt.
The central elements of Engelsholm Park are the terraces with trimmed trees and the moat. A special feature of Engelsholm is the placing on an islet in a moat on the edge of a larger lake. Today, the park covers 15 acres.
