Køge Museum is history experience for the whole family. Whether age 7 or 97, you will be in for a great experience when visiting newly renovated Køge Museum.
Accommodated in a former merchant’s house dating from 1619, it is reopening with two completely new exhibitions.
‘Powdermonkeys – Courage Is Ageless’ tells the heartbreaking story of the loss of the warship Dannebroge. You will follow the disastrous day in October 1710 when the ship set out on its own to chase the Swedish navy out of Køge Harbour. The ship blew up with 15 tons of gunpowder on board, and more than 500 crew were killed. Only 9 escaped uninjured. We follow the day hour by hour, and some of Denmark’s best scriptwriters have assisted us in developing the story called ‘Powdermonkeys’, describing Commodore Iver Huitfeldt and the two gunpowder boys Pelle and Jens aged 7 and 16, who lugged gunpowder about on board. Will the three of them survive the explosion?
The second exhibition at the museum, ‘Gifts from the Past’, takes you all the way back in time to the Mesolithic period. En route, you will learn about wedding dresses, town planning and Viking homes. This knowledge is put into a modern perspective on your iPad guide by Danish experts, such as Jim Lyngvild, Susanne Rützou and Peter Lund Madsen.
Our exhibitions are child friendly, and you are welcome to take coffee/cocoa and cake bought from the museum’s shop with you while walking around there. Benches are available in all rooms, hammocks in the attic and tables and benches in the cosy back garden, which also holds a Dannebroge playground with free admission.
