Kronborg Castle

Kronborg Castle is known worldwide as Hamlet’s and Shakespeare's castle.

It was Frederik 2 – father of Christian 4 - who built and named the splendid Renaissance castle we know today. The castle was built 1574-85 inspired by European monarchs as a symbol of wealth and power.

The history of the castle goes back to 1420, though, when Eric of Pomerania built the fortress Krogen in order to control the Sound and charge the profitable Sound Dues. Sound Dues were very important to Elsinore for more than 400 years, and made the city and the castle known worldwide - even Shakespeare heard about it!

Kronborg was devastated by a major fire in 1629 which only the chapel survived. Christian 4 rebuilt the castle with extensive new decorations in the baroque style, but in 1658 Kronborg again was struck by disaster when the Swedes bombarded and occupied the castle and took many precious art treasures as booty.

In 1690 the castle was strengthened as a fortress with Crownwork of Christian 5. Hereafter the castle was hardly ever inhabited by the royal. From 1785 until 1923 it was used by the military, and only  in recent time thoroughly restored and brought back to Frederik 2’s and Christian 4’s heyday .

In 2000 Kronborg was admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage list.
