Restaurant Bedre Byggeskik is located in the middle of Vejen opposite Vejen Kunstmuseum (Vejen Art Museum) and the new museum garden containing the Vejen troll. The building was built in the style Bedre Byggeskik, which has given the establishment its name. The restaurant offers lunches and evening meals, involving well-made food using first-class produce. The food is attractively served and accompanied by appropriate wines.
Restaurant Bedre Byggeskik’s rooms are light and spacious and reflect the style of the outside of the building. Guests at Restaurant Bedre Byggeskik can also be given information about the style of the building, as well as the possibilities on offer in the town.
A little about the house
The house was built in 1932 for power station manager Mads ’Lys’ Hansen. From his bay window, he could gaze at the water in the fountain Troldespringevandet (the troll in front of Vejen Art Museum). The power station lay just behind the fountain. As the building displays very Danish traits, it also offers a very unique experience to foreign visitors.
Bedre byggeskik (“better architectural style”) was a period in Danish architecture between around 1910 and 1940. A number of architects and builders constructed buildings in this style in the Vejen area. Houses in the Bedre Byggeskik style are known for their facades of classical red or yellow brick and often have red tile roofs. The masonry is often characterised by the brick material and there is little or no decoration of the façade. Bedre Byggeskik did not involve lavish decoration, such as façade garlands and stucco. The houses typically also display classical proportions, which are especially reflected in the relationship between the façade and the roof, the size of the windows and their placement in the façade.
