Why do Danes celebrate Sankt Hans?
The festive season Sankt Hans is a Danish name for John the Baptist, who was born 6 months prior to Jesus on the 24th of June. Therefore, this date is called the day of Sankt Hans. It is a tradition in the northern countries to celebrate festive days on the evening before the given day. As a result, Sankt Hans is celebrated the day before, on the 23rd of June. Just like Christmas is celebrated the evening before Christmas day.
Sankt Hans is also being celebrated in other northern European countries like England, Ireland, Germany, Poland, Russia and France. The tradition is mostly celebrated in the northern and Baltic countries due to the long light nights in these areas.
