Self-guided Walk to Christianshavn and Christiania
Short bus or metro ride to quaint neighbourhood Christianshavn is a charming old neighbourhood with quaint 19th century houses lining the streets, facing the lively canals where yachts and house boats are docked alongside beautiful sailboats. In Christianshavn, you will also get a chance to explore the Free Town of Christiania, a town in the city, famous for its alternative life-style and architecture. Catch bus number 2A from the Town Hall Square or the Central Station, or the metro from Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv and get off at the Torvegade/Wildersgade intersection. Continue left down Wildersgade, a picturesque street dotted with old Christianshavn houses and home to two very popular cafés, the Café Wilder and Café Luna’s. Canals, boats, outdoor life and Our Saviour’s Church Turn right on to Sankt Annæ Gade and continue down this street till you reach the Christianshavn Canal. The ambient streets lining the canals are always alive with citizens walking their dogs, sipping thermo coffee or downing beers. On warm summer evenings, families bring baskets of home-cooked meals with them for al fresco dining by the quay side. Christianshavns Bådudlejning og Café, 29, Overgaden neden Vandet, offers boat rentals and delicious café fare. This place has a unique canalside atmosphere that attracts people from all over the city. Having crossed the canal, continue further down Sankt Annæ Gade to Our Saviour’s Church. From Sankt Annæ Gade, turn left on to Prinsessegade and continue straight ahead till you reach the Free Town of Christiania. Enter Christiania through the tiny gate commonly referred to by Christianites as Prærieporten (the “Prairie Gate”). Click “More” to continue your tour.
