Shakespeare Festival 2017 at Kronborg Castle offers 3 extraordinary, yet very different open-air performances. HamletScenen presents its first international, in-house production of Shakespeare’s immortal classic, HAMLET. ROSENKRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERNARE DEAD as absurd and tragi-comic Open Air Cinema, and finally the audience will meet the ghost of Ophelia in OPHELIA – NOH, world premiere by Tokyo-based Sakurama group.

HAMLET, 1 – 19 August 8:00 pm
The clash between the new and the old world is raging. Brutal traditions are facing the challenge of knowledge and education, and hierarchies are on the point of toppling, when the ideological, impassioned exchange student, Hamlet returns home from the University of Wittenberg to attend his father’s funeral in Kronborg. ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, 20 August 9:00 pm
Absurd, tragi-comic and existentialist – these are three of the key words that sum up Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990). Hamlet’s old school friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are the confused protagonists in this quirky comic gem. They travel to Kronborg Castle to help out King Claudius with his crazy stepson Hamlet, but do not realise they are merely pawns in a game, in which their own lives are at stake. Read more

OPHELIA - NOH 22 – 23 August 8:00 pm
Japan meets Shakespeare at Kronborg Castle. The ghost of Ophelia haunts the ramparts of Kronborg, where audiences will meet her in the production, Ophelia – Noh. The Shakespeare Festival is proud to present the world premiere of this guest production performed by the renowned, Tokyo-based KOH LO SHA Noh company. Read more
