Spring Store Blåkilde
Store Blåkilde (great blue spring) is located south-southwest of Madum Sø.
It is used to be acknowledged as the spring most abounding in water in this area, and thereby the most active in Denmark. Resent measuring however, degrades the spring to a position as no. 3, concerning the amount of water gushing, measured to approx. 140 l/sec. If you include several small springs located in the immediated surroundings the total out-flow amounts to 300 l/sec.
Store Blåkilde is a typical pool-spring. The pool is oval and approx. 12 metres wide and 4-5 metres deep.
The clean blue colour of Store Blåkilde, is due to the fact, that the bottom partly consists of chalk, and the reflection from the blue sky.
It is probably the clear, blue water that has given the name to the spring. Another possibility is that the name origins the name "Blotkilde" referring to an old Dansih word for sacrifice (Spring of Sacrifice). During last century it was still a costum for the master of Willestrup Castle to throw silvercoins in the pool before hunts. The movements of the coins in the water was said to give omens about the outcome of the hunt.
There might still be a treasure hidden in the spring.
The spring is preserved and collecting of plants and animals is prohibited.
