Shaking - Shimmering (Strømmede -Tindrende) Corrugated Iron Sculpture by Søren Friis, 2010, Sindal
Søren Friis wrote about this sculpture:
"Shaking - Shimmering was in the context of the international arts festival in Port 20:10
The concept behind PORT 20:10 was that through visual art would try to challenge the audience and an explorative approach to how art is disseminated today.
For PORT 20:10, had invited professional artists to submit project proposals. Shaking - Shimmering is one of the projects the artistic direction of Port 20:10 selected to realization.
Originally Shaking - Shimmering was located in Hirtshals on Grønningen next to the Old Town Hall. It is the heart of the city, an important traffic hub and linked to the most active shopping street in the city.
My idea was to make a cube of approx. 5x5x5 meters of corrugated panels (corrugated sheets of galvanized steel, which is normally used for roofing).
The cube has many references in architecture and in free art. Corrugated Iron has the property that you can only see the part of the waves, which faces away when viewed obliquely from the side. Author Peter Laugesen and I have worked on this idea.
On the four faces of the cube poems are stencilled, the text changes, depending on which side you face
My mission has been to create a work that contains elements of architecture, sculpture, painting and poetry and invite viewers to exploring all around the sculpture. Looking at an angle on one face, one can read one text, while the content is different when you look at the same face from the other side.
There is a blue text read, when you look into the left side of the waves and a red when you look at the right side. Looking into a surface from the front, there is both a blue and a red text.
If you read the four sides in context reads:
TWINKLING SMALL STONE ON PILLARS OF SAND in blue
MOVING TIME DURING THE HIGHWAY in red
Or you can read the two texts simultaneously so it reads:
TWINKLING TIME IN SMALL STONE ON THE HIGHWAY MOVING PILLARS OF SAND
The text can also be read the other way around, or you can start somewhere else, and it can be read diagonally".
