How to travel cheap in Denmark

Denmark has a reputation for being an expensive place to holiday, but it's easy to travel cheaply and enjoy free things to do, if you know where to look! For visitors looking for a unique way to experience Denmark and for ways to do it cheaply, we've put together a few ideas for fun, cheap and unusual things to do, to really experience Denmark.

Free holiday on an ecological farm

If you’re looking for a free holiday with a great sense of community, contact Willing Workers On Organic Farms (WWOOF). As a “wwoofer” you'll get stuck into practical day-to-day farm work in return for free board and food. WWOOF hopes to spread knowledge of and interest in environmentally friendly agriculture and living. And it happens to be a great cheap holiday too! Find out how to take part at WWOOF’s homepage.

Become a strawberry picker

Pick strawberries during the day and get paid for it. Then enjoy the local area after work! Denmark is an agricultural nation and picking strawberries in Denmark is popular summer passtime for young people from the EU. Camp at the farm and meet other young people from across Europe. When the strawberry season ends, there’s often other produce to pick on farms nearby.

Free camping in Denmark

Denmark has a number of designated areas where you are allowed to pitch a tent free of charge and spend one night. The Danish Nature Agency’s map will help you find these sites across Denmark. (Note: Wild camping sites are marked green.)

Enjoy Denmark's nature for free

Denmark is one of the easiest places in the world to take a cheap biking holiday. It's also a great place to get out and explore nature on foot and walking holidays are another popular cheap thing to do in Denmark. If you spend the night along your route at one of Denmark's 1,000 wild camping areas, you can really keep to a tight budget.

Important information

EU citizens can work for 3 months in Denmark without a residence permit, but it's recommended that you find the job before coming to Denmark, to ensure that all formalities are taken care of. Get all the necessary information on the Seasonal Work website.
