The Cisterns

The Cisterns, the former water reservoir beneath the green grass of Søndermarken park across from Frederiksberg Castle, is a unique exhibition venue in Copenhagen.

Buried deep beneath Søndermarken's green grass in the Frederiksberg area of Copenhagen is a massive underground space, where daylight never reaches. Here, you will find a dark, cold and moist underground world resembling the environment of cathedrals and gloomy catacombs.

Once the spacious venue was the city's cisterns filled with 16 million liters of drinking water, but now the water is gone and has been replaced by art exhibitions and various events about the architecture and unique climate.

Ingvar Cronhammar

In 2015, you can see an exhibition by artist Ingvar Cronhammar, an ambitious and comprehensive installation created from site specific challenges and climate.

As a visitor you will be surrounded by water, both in the sense of a large water surface covering the floor, 28 columns of luminous, falling water, and especially water dust will settle as a haze in the spaces.

The water mirrors, reflects and co-creates both the visual and the musical part of the project, created by composer Martin Hall.
