Vejle Kunst Forening "Kunstbrænderiet"
A visit to the exhibition venue of Vejle Kunst Forening (The Vejle Art Society) is a unique experience. The thick, whitewashed walls, the old cast iron window frames and the sand-strewn floors render the art space a sense of spirit and patina. Here there is room for everyone, and it’s a place that appeals to all artists.
Vejle Kunst Forening was founded 11 March 1932 on the initiative of ophthalmologist Henry Fabricius Jensen (1896-1984), himself an artist. The society’s aim was to host art exhibitions from all corners of the nation, including Bornholm, Copenhagen and other cities. But the priorities have changed somewhat since.
Local Vejle artists who played a part in the society’s early years include Hans Agersnap, Ole Olsen, Victor Jensen, Robert Dueholm Jessen, Olaf Markussen, Egon Mathiesen, Ejnar Iversen and Albert Bertelsen.
Over the years the society has had many different venues, but for the last several years its fixed location has been Kunstbrænderiet. The name (which means The Art Distillery) takes its reference from the merchant houses in the street (Søndergade), which in the early 1900s produced all kinds of things, including schnapps. The exhibitions are now featured at the old Møhls Gaard.
Every March, the society holds its annual General Assembly. Traditionally, 200 members out of the 500-member strong society turn up for the occasion where we draw lots between 30-40 artworks. It’s always an enjoyable evening.
