Treat yourself: shop in Copenhagen
Shopping in Copenhagen is a treat in itself. The city centre is a cosy knot of small streets with one-of-a-kind boutiques, well-known names and classy department stores. No need to traipse over a large distance looking for interesting shops. Copenhagen’s commercial heart is concentrated in the beautiful old town centre and in the buzzing city districts of Vesterbro, Østerbro, Nørrebro and Frederiksberg. So grab your wallet and make your way to Scandinavia’s best shopping city.
Strøget: Denmark's fashion high street
Many shopping trips start here on the world’s longest pedestrian shopping street. Strøget pulses through the heart of the city centre, from Nørreport Station all the way to the Town Hall Square (Rådhuspladsen). It's filled with some of Copenhagen’s most historic buildings and attractions as well as exciting shops.
At the Town Hall end you’ll find young fashion brands. The stretch around the atmospheric Amagertorv, with its fountain and square, is a great place to stop for a picture and a quick drink in an outdoor café before heading into one of Denmark’s best-known flagship and department stores. Exclusive fashion brands tend to nestle down near the Kongens Nytorv end.
Torvehallerne: Danish and international delicatessen
Close to Nørreport Station, right next to the heart of Copenhagen, is the brand new indoor market area known as Torvehallerne. These two glass buildings buzz every day of the week, except Monday, with vendors and hungry shoppers.
This is the place to head for a bite on the go; for tapas, smørrebrød, sandwiches and an excellent selection of tea, coffee and smoothie stands. It’s also a great place to swing by and pick up delicatessen, fresh fish, meat and produce for dinner. In the summer, take your bite outside and enjoy the continental atmosphere of the market’s outdoor seating area.
