The new church in Ishøj is an entirely modern church in a strict and simple style. The architects Wohlert have succeeded in recreating the fundamental idea of the Middle Age church, which most Danes see as the prototype of a “real” church. When the foundation stone was laid, a tile with Ishøj’s logotype was built in above the foundation. It can now be seen in the porch.
Vejleå Church is white on the exterior as well as on the interior. It is built in the basic geometric forms square, triangle and circle. There is no mistaking about the Tower, which is five stories high and has a roof that repeats that of the nave on a smaller scale, but in such a way that the casings of the constructions are reflectors of the two bells – one with the inscription: "Hver søndag er min glæde stor, jeg kalder, kom og hør Guds Ord" (Every Sunday I feel great joy, I am calling, come and hear the words of God).
Even before the first sod was turned, artist Peter Brandes was asked to decorate the church room in collaboration with the architects. The altar, the crucifix and the altar silver as well as the baptismal font with the baptismal basin and ewer were also part of the work. The most overwhelming decoration is the six big triangular glass paintings, whose reflections run down the large walls and the slanting ceiling boards of the church creating a wonderful play of light.
