Denmarks largest Viking market in Ribe
More than 300 Vikings from the whole of Europe will gather to recreate an authentic and lively market atmosphere as it was in Ribe 1300 years ago. The public will be able to experience, how the Vikings lived and worked, and at the market place’s many exciting stalls a good trade can be done. Battle re-enactments, riding and archery displays are scheduled on both days.
The atmosphere in the market place is lively and bustling with market stalls where the Vikings also work at their craft. The public can discover how to weave and see how jewellery, glass beads, leather pouches, shoes, clothes, pottery, wooden objects, drinking horns, helmets and toys for the youngest Vikings, are made. The blacksmith works hard, and from heavy hammer blows arrowheads and knives are made.
At the marketplace one also finds the simplest and finest kitchens, where food is cooked over fires, flat bread is baked and porridge and soup are bubbling in large, black pots. A hen gives its last cluck before being slaughtered, but that moment’s drama is soon replaced by simple, merry sounds from some musicians, who quickly get the attention of the public around them.
The public can also meet the Vikings’ horses and the Icelandic horse at the Viking market. During the riding displays all five differently paced horses take part in a tough, little race.
