Fregatten Jylland Ebeltoft - Djursland - Eastjutland
Mostly for men –
who want to give their family a blast.
Full-blown summer on the world’s longest wooden ship Only in Denmark! Only in Ebeltoft! Only on Fregatten Jylland!
Full-blown international experience.
There is nothing woolly about the way stern Commander Rostrup reenacts the Battle of Helgoland in 1864 in a drama-packed cannon display that takes place daily throughout the high season.
The cannon is the centrepiece when Rostrup barks orders to his crew, and members of the public can even be called upon when the cannon needs to be loaded and fired. The cannon display culminates when Commander Rostrup fires off the cannon on board the frigate with a huge blast, and the cannon thunder rolls across Ebeltoft Bay. Warning! Not for delicate souls or people with sensitive ears. Visitors can also follow in the footsteps of the ill- ated officer Hans Christian on Fregatten Jylland, and experience the Battle of Helgoland through a rare eye-witness account of blood, pride and affection. Or crawl into a hammock during a spell of guard duty like a real 19th century seaman.
Or get a taste of royalty while on a beautiful sailing trip around Ebeltoft Bay in the three-masted vessel Barkassen. In 1874 Barkassen carried King Christian IX and Queen Louise on board the royal ship Fregatten Jylland. The king used the frigate as a royal yacht for the next 12 years, visiting his well-married daughters and family living in various European kingdoms.
Life-size Danish history Fregatten Jylland is the ship that refused to die after it had fulfilled its duties as a warship and royal yacht. Thanks to the impressive efforts of many people, and countless hours of craftsmanship enthusiastically performed by the Fregat shipyard’s own shipwrights, painters and smiths, today we can go on board a unique and fascinating piece of real-life Danish history.
The shipyard’s craftsmen, who are experts at building and restoring wooden ships, are today responsible for maintaining Fregatten Jylland. It is possible to watch and follow their activities throughout the year. The history of the frigate, from when the keel was laid in 1857 and it was launched in 1862, and from when it was in naval service and on long cruises to its complete restoration, is now depicted in a fascinating film which is shown hourly to museum visitors.
Fregatten Jylland is a unique maritime tourist attraction surrounded by other wooden vessels of varying sizes which are normally moored in the frigate harbour with its special atmosphere. There are regular exhibitions, talks, concerts and theatrical performances in the Prince Consort Henrik’s Hall with an exhibition area, auditorium and course activities held throughout the year. In the Frigate Café or on board the lightship Fyrskib XXI, visitors can take a break and have something to eat or drink in the charming maritime surroundings with views across the sea to the stunning Mols Bjerge hills. Welcome again on board Fregatten Jylland!
