Frida Kahlo - a life in art

On saturday, September 7th, a new exhibition titled Frida Kahlo - a life in art opens at ARKEN in Ishøj. The exhibition sheds light on the Mexican artist's dramatic life, from her childhood during the Mexican revolution (1910-1917), through her tumultuous marriage to Diego Rivera, to her death in 1954, at age 47.

The exhibition displays many of Frida Kahlo’s most famous paintings. Amongst them are a selection of her iconic self portraits and still life paintings. Through colour and symbolism, her pieces express at once pain and passion. Kahlo’s self representation, feminist and modern viewpoints and political opinions are clear in her work, which tie together the political and the psychological.

After a serious accident left her handicapped at age 18, Kahlo was forced to leave her studies in medicine. During her convalescence, she took up painting, despite her bedridden state. Her work drew the attention of Diego Rivera, a prominent Mexican mural painter, graffiti artist of the time - and Kahlo’s future husband.

As a part of this exhibition, several of Diego Rivera’s pieces can be experienced, as well as the works of Frida Kahlo’s contemporaries, such as María Izquierdo, David Alfaro Siquieros and José Clemente Orozco. The exhibition also includes several film clips and many photographs of Kahlo, as well as images from her home in Mexico City, Casa Azul. These photos show objects such as Kahlo’s corsets, which she was forced to wear after her tragic accident.

The exhibition will run from September 7th 2013 through January 12th, 2014.
