The history

Hirtshals Museum is situated in an old fisherman’s house built in 1880. The house is decorated as in 1915 to show how a fisherman family lived at this time.

The exhibition

The permanent exhibition is named “Hirtshals by the sea”. It focuses on the history of Hirtshals with the sea as vital element. Through seven subjects the exhibition illustrate the city's history, the construction of the harbour, the ferry activities and show old anecdote about shipwrecks and rescues, about fishing and about life at a fishing harbor.

Bjesk (local beverage)

Hirtshals Museum covers also an exhibition about the local beverage “Bjesk”, and tells the story of medical herbs suitable for spicing up snaps. Bring a bottle of Brøndum Snaps and have it “transformed” into one of the tasty Bjesk in old Hirtshals style.

The museums Garden

In July the museums garden will hum of activities. Fishermen will show how to bind seine and trawls and there will be tastings of fish dishes.
