Raku is an ancient Japanese burning technique. It is very different from burning in an electric oven, because at Raku the items are first burned up until they are red hot, after which they are quickly taken out into the open air. Then they are lowered into a barrel with sawdust and a lid is put on.

The effect of this is some very dynamic and beautiful colors along with distinctive crackles.

These are things to enjoy those they play beautifully with the changing light throughout the day.

I have been working with this difficult technique for 30 years, and am still very fascinated by it.
