Jels Church

Originally, the church in Jels was build as a wooden church in the 12th century. Later on, a Romanesque church was constructed in granite ashlar. This ashlar was reused when building the present church which was consecrated on 13 November 1854.

The church is situated close to Jels Nedersø - one of the three lakes - probably because the lake, according to old sources, was considered a holy lake where baptisms were performed.

At the exterior of the church you find several decorations, i.a. carved human heads at the eastern corners, a lion on the western side and on the northern side an imprint of a woman's foot symbolizing that the church is consecrated to St. Anna.

Inside the church you find the paten and chalice, the Bible, 2 turned candlesticks with gold leaf, 3 paintings which have formed the altarpiece and a late Gothic crucifix from the old church. The remaining furniture is from 1854 or later.

During the summer, organ concerts are arranged in the church.
