Town Walking Kerteminde

 

Start at Kerteminde Torv/Kerteminde Square

1. Kerteminde Torv/Kerteminde Square
1 Kerteminde Parish Church is situated in the middle of the town square. Rebuilt in its present form in 1476 (late Gothic period), tripple-naved in the manner of a basilica and under one roof. Informational brochures are to be found in the porch, where the Skipper's Pallbearer Society's biers are also on display.

Continue towards Andresen’s Merchant yard, go through Vestergade’s gate

2. Andresen’s Merchant Yard
Vestergade 1-3 and Langegade 5-7: Andresen's Merchant Yard, comprises buildings dating from each century, starting from the 1500’s. The yard functioned as a merchant house until the 1980’s.
The yard has recently been renovated and information regarding the place can be found at the gate facing Langegade.

Continue through the gate facing Sønderstræde and towards Lillestranden

3. Lillestranden/Little Beach
Lillestranden or "Little Beach" is an old fishing neighborhood, where some of the city’s most attractive houses are located. Here resident fishermen still ply their trade. In the old times only, fishermen lived in this area. On the left side, you can find the fishmonger.

4. Fiskergade 83
The merchant E.B. Muus founded the Sailor's Foundation in 1880, ensuring that free lodgings were made available to sailors and their families.
Continue towards Fiskergade.
Note the beautiful old doors along Fiskergade. Halfway down the street, you can find a narrow lane with the ironic name: Avenue des Champs Elysées.

5. Vestergade 25, The Home Guard
Built in 1694. Originally a merchant's yard, it later became a parsonage and then a brewery. From 1950 onwards, it was the regional headquarters of the Home Guard. In 1730, the parson, Johan Hornemann, was poisoned to death by his wife and her lover. The murderers were put to death and their bodies were then broken to the wheel.

Across from Vestergade, you can find Rebslagergade (Ropemaker street), as the name indicates ropes were made here.

Continuing along Vestergade, you can find Muusgården, a merchant's yard built in the 1820's and functioning as retail up to the mid 1970's. "Skænkestuen", a pub reminiscent of a bygone era, is accessible from the courtyard.

Continue towards the square and then turn right on Langegade and towards Langebro.

6. Statue of Frederik Paludan-Müller (1809-1876)
The statue of the Danish poet is located at the corner of Langegade and Hindsholmvej. A memorial plaque is to be found at Langegade 2, on the properties wall.

Continue towards Langebro.

7. The Statue of Amanda
As you cross the bridge (Langebro) look to your right to see the statue of Amanda, sculpted in 1954 by Robert Lund-Jensen. Amanda is the city’s most iconic symbol. There are benches around the statue, so it is possible to take a break before getting on with the journey.

Continue over Odensevej, via Klintevej towards Skovvej.

8. Skovpavillionen
On the way along Skovvej, you will pass the Tennis and Petonque lanes and finally you will arrive at the beautiful hostel in Kerteminde. Right across the hostel you can find Skovpavillionen.

Continue through the forest towards Klintevej and up until The Southern Beach.

9. Sydstranden/The Southern Beach
This is one of the two beaches close by the city. Everybody is welcome to visit. The municipality has provided a small bridge for swimming guests.

Continue along the path and towards the harbor.

10. Fiskerihavnen/The Fishing Harbour
Kerteminde’s fishing harbor is Funen’s largest and its auction hall was active until a few years ago.

If you continue by Dosseringen and towards Langebro, you can find Varmestuen. Restaurant, formerly a smokehouse, and the famous Rudolf Mathis Restaurant. You will also pass the city’s only slipway, where the fishing boats are taken up for revision and reparation. Right after, you will find the bridge to the old wooden ship, pay special attention to “Rylen”, Johannes Larsen and Achton Friis expedition’s ship towards “the Danish Islands”.

11. Toldboden
In Strandgade 3 you will find Toldboden. Since the 1970’s the building has provided the art association and the museum with an exhibition room, used for different special exhibitions.
The building itself is a museum piece, built in the 1500’s. Entrance is often free of charge.

Strandgade 2 is home to Tornøes Hotel, which has been a functioning hotel since 1860.

Continue your journey along Hindsholmvej.

12. Fjord & Bælt Center
Fjord og Bælt includes an underwater observatorium, exhibitions and a kiosk. The feeding of porpoises and seals happens several times a day, and guests are welcome to watch.

Continue along Ndr. Havnekaj over to the Marina.

13. The Marina
Kerteminde’s marina is very famous across Denmark and has been awared as the country’s best marina.
Here you can find the Restaurant Kerteminde Sejlklub.

14. Restaurant Marinaen
15. Kerteminde Mini Golf
Taking a standpoint on the marina’s bro 9 (bridge 9), you can turn left and follow the path directly to Restaurant Marinaen and the mini golf field (nr. 27 on map), and all the way up to Hindholmsvej.

16. Johannes Larsen Museum
Cross Hindsholmvej (see nr. 15 on map) and continue until the end of the ensemble (nr. 16 on map) where you will find the steps towards the area behind Johannes Larsens Museum. Follow the path around the museum to reach the entrance.

Johannes Larsen museum is erected in the painter’s old home. He built his villa in 1901 on Møllebakken in the northern part of Kerteminde, where he moved in with his – also painter – wife, Alhed, and their two children. Through a long and artistic life, Johannes Larsen produced a vast selection of paintings in oil, watercolour and diverse graphic work. Even though the motives in his paintings were very broad – with emphasis on nature – he has come to be known as the “bird painter”.

Opposite to the museum, you can find Svanemøllen (the Swan Mill), built in 1852.

Continue down to Hindsholmvej.

Her you will pass by the statue of John Christmas Møller, a Danish conservative politician, who fled to England in 1942.

Continue towards the city center via Langegade.

Note “the gap” in the row of houses at the end of Langegade. This was caused by the railroad Odense– Kerteminde – Martofte, which ceased operation and was consequently taken down in 1966.

Note the old main door on Langegade 54.

17. The Birthplace of Johannes Larsen
Langegade 50, built in 1883, was the painter’s birthplace.

Continue further down Langegade.

Langegade 37 was turned into a school in 1905, and currently functions as a pharmacy (nr. 22 on map).
Note as well Langegade 31, a very beautiful timber-framed building, which now serves as a bank. The inscription: “A house without a Lord, soon becomes desolate. 1960”

Cross Langegade and you can find the old city well, which was in use during the 1700’s. The well was found during the reconstruction of Langegade in 1994.

By Langegade 12, one of the city’s protected buildings, turn towards Trollegade.

18. Museum shop “Høkeren”
In Trollegade you will pass the museums store “Høkeren”. The building is from the 1700’s, and when crossing the threshold, one is transported back in time to the beginning of the 20th century.

Continue down Strandgade, past Kerteminde local archives, up to Søndre Kirkerist and towards the city´s square.

Here, you can visit Farvergården (nr. 04 on map), a timber-framed house from 1630. It used to serve as a dye workshop up until 1930. Nowadays, the building houses the regional museum.
