Vester Ulslev Vingaard (vineyard)
Winemaker Preben Jørgensen welcomes you to Vester Ulslev Vingaard, Lolland’s first and the southernmost commercial vineyard in Denmark in a beautiful setting between the Baltic Sea and the Maribo lakes. The vineyards are of 1,3 ha with a total of 1.700 wines and we expect to reach a production of 2.000 bottles of barrel-aged red wine in 2010.
Vester Ulslev Vingaard is the only vineyard in Denmark that dries the grapes before the vinification process, inspired by the famous Italian Amarone. The Italians call it "passito" – we call it "tørrevin".
Vester Ulslev Vingaard’s winemaking is traditional and you will not find huge stainless vats. They transfer the wine to oak barrels (barriques) immediately following alcohol fermentation and pressing. The wines undergo second fermentation or malolactic fermentation and aging in the barrels. At intervals the wine is racked and finally bottled when it has been decided whether the finished wine shall consist of one or more varieties.
