In Denmark it is possible to reach even the remotest corners of the country by bicycle, because a fine-meshed network of signposted national, regional and local cycle routes covers Denmark.

The 11 national cycle routes The backbone of the Danish cycle network is 11 national cycle routes. The routes run either north-to-south or east-to-west, connecting the individual regions and most major towns. If you follow the national cycle routes, you will go through some of Denmark’s most beautiful regions and past many of our greatest scenic sights and attractions.
Marking of the national cycle routes The national cycle routes are marked with red/white numbers from 1 to 12 (number 11 does not excist!) on a blue background. North-to-south routes have uneven numbers and east-to-west routes have even numbers. The aggregate route network is more then 4,200 km, and the distinct signs make it easier to follow the routes. So even if it is nice to have a map at hand, you need not be a map-reading expert to find your way!

Route length
The length of the national cycle routes is between 230 and 650km. With the exception of route no. 10 – Touring Bornholm – which is ”only” 105km. The national routes are ideal if you want to go on a cycling holiday for 8-10 days. But, if you plan on taking route no. 5 – the East Coast route – which is 650km, you will need a little more time.
Regional cycle routes If you have picked a particular area where you want to cycle – or if you want to plan your own round-trip – you will need to know the Danish regional cycle route network. Once you know it, it is no big deal planning your own cycle vacation in Denmark. The 10 national routes are supplemented by thousands of kilometers signposted and mapped regional cycle routes.

Marking of the regional cycle route network The regional cycle routes are marked with white numbers from 16-99 on a blue background. All regional cycle routes have been mapped on the country maps, and the route network is so fine-meshed that there is practically no place in Denmark where you and your bicycle cannot go together.
Country maps With the country maps to hand, you will have a general overview of the existing routes. So, if you are planning a week’s bicycle holiday on Funen, all you have to do is choose the relevant routes on the map – and you have planned your holiday!
Everybody can join in
Everybody can cycle in Denmark. You never need to climb higher than 120 metres above sea level, because we have no mountains in Denmark – only gentle hills, at least half of which are descending! Most routes are flat or slightly hilly stretches, which will be no problem if you have a bicycle with a five-speed or seven-speed gear.
Safe routes Cycling on the cycle routes in Denmark is secure and safe. The routes follow narrow roads where traffic is scarce, undisturbed forest tracks, special-purpose cycle lanes, cycle tracks and disused railway tracks.
Tarmacked roads By far the major part – approx. 80% - of the national route network has been laid out on tarmacked roads, where you can easily cycle with your gear and children on your bike. Nor will a cycle trailer be any problem.
