The first settlements in the area. Bishop Absalon built a little fortress on the Isle of “Slotsholmen” to protect the area, and the first step to found the Danish capital Copenhagen was taken. Copenhagen grew rapidly. Copenhagen replaces Roskilde as the Danish capital. King Christian I was the first King to be crowned in Copenhagen. Copenhagen University was founded. “Bakken”, The world's oldest amusement park, located north of Copenhagen in Klampenborg was started (the amusement park still exist). During the rule of King Christian IV many of Copenhagen's most remarkable buildings were constructed - e.g. Rosenborg Castle - The Round Tower - Old Stock Exchange - The Canals of Copenhagen - Kastellet (The Old Citadel) Copenhagen withstood a severe siege by the swedes The city was ravaged by large fires, which destroyed most of the medieval part of town Frederiksstaden, a fashionable district for the city's most important citizens, was planned. The centerpiece of the new quarter was the Amalienborg Palaces. The naval battle of Copenhagen against England. The British attacked Copenhagen with a heavy bombardment of the city. The working class quarters Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Østerbro became a part of Copenhagen. The amusement park "Tivoli" was founded on the fortified glacis outside Vesterport (the West Gate). Carlsberg Brewery was founded in Valby just outside of Copenhagen The First Central Station in Copenhagen was built. Copenhagen Zoo was founded. The First Tramcar in Copenhagen. The world famous fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen dies in Copenhagen and was buried on Assistens Kirkegård. The First Power Plant in Copenhagen. The building of Copenhagen's Town Hall was completed. The first "Pølsevogn" (Sausage stand) was established in Copenhagen. The first separate bicycle paths was established. The statue of the Little Mermaid was unveiled at Langelinie. Kastrup Airport outside of Copenhagen was inaugurated. During World War II was Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark occupied by Nazi troops. Copenhagen’s first skyscrapers were built at “Bellahøj”. The worlds largest Pedestrian Shopping Street, called “Strøget”, was inaugurated. Christiania, also known as "Freetown Christiania", was created in a squatted military area in the borough of Christianshavn. The first Jazz Festival in Copenhagen was arranged. Official inauguration of the combined tunnel and bridge to Sweden called The Oresund Bridge. The first Metro line in and around Copenhagen opened. The New Opera House, called "Operaen", was inaugurated. Copenhagen was ranked as the best city in the world that offers its residents " the highest quality of life" by the British magazine "Monocle".
