City Break in Odense

Odense, on the island of Funen, is the birthplace of the writer Hans Christian Andersen – a town with Lilliputian streets and a fairy-tale feel about it; indeed the whole town is under the spell of the writer and his childhood home forms the heart of H. C. Andersens Hus, where you can see intriguing exhibitions on his life and work. The new cultural centre Fyrtøjet (“The Tinder Box”) brings the fairy tale to life for visitors of all ages. But Odense is also a city and cultural centre with museums, theatres and a music venues as well as a thriving commercial centre.

Culture centres and shopping

Brandts Klædefabrik is a living culture centre containing art galleries, a museum of photography, cafés and cinemas and more. Near Koncerthuset is Carl Nielsens Museum, dedicated to the composer, and the open-air museum, Den Fynske Landsby, transports us back to a bygone age. For keen shoppers, Odense’s 3km network of attractive pedestrian precincts, with shops, galleries and café scene is a great place to start. But if your soul needs soothing, take a gentle stroll along the riverbank, where Hans Christian Andersen’s mother once toiled as a washerwoman.
