Aalholm Castle

Get a good view of Aalholm Castle from Nysted Harbour and the surrounding hiking and cycling routes.

From the dam, you can get a close-up view of the mighty fortress, which is considered one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Denmark.

For almost 1000 years, Aalholm Castle has stood on its islet in Nysted Fjord.

The history of Aalholm

From the 1300s, the castle was the seat of the royal sheriff and belonged to the crown until 1726.

In 1734 it was acquired by the Raben-Levetzau family, who owned it until 1995.

The castle has been remodelled several times over the years and underwent extensive restoration in 1889. The buildings still have a distinct medieval flavour.

In the north wing, frescoed inscriptions recall Frederik II's visit in 1585.

Access to the castle

The castle is not open to the public.
