Thousands of years of history are waiting to be explored on Funen, an island packed with manor houses and castles. Be inspired by the place that has inspired painters for generations and gave the world Hans Christian Andersen.

Art

You can experience works by the artists' movement known as The Farm Painters (Fynboerne) at Faaborg Museum and at Johannes Larsen Museum in Kerteminde. You'll find temporary exhibitions of contemporary art at Brandt's in Odense and Grimmerhus near Middelfart, where you'll also find Denmark's Ceramics Museum.

Manor houses

There are a particularly high number of manor houses on Funen and they make a truly impressive mark on the island with their grand buildings and large parklands. Many manor houses are open to the public, for example Egeskov Castle, which is Europe's best preserved Renaissance moat-surrounded castle. You can enjoy other houses from outside, walking in their landscaped parks and formal gardens.

Geoglogical heritage

Funen’s landscape has many well-preserved remains from the past, such as The Lady Stone (Damestenen) and Hesselager’s Stone (Hesselagerstenen) on East Funen. It is presumed that the almost 10 metre high, 1,000 tonne Hesselager’s Stone was carried to Funen by ice during the last glacial period. The stone still shows scrape marks today.
