Paramount showpiece
For the first time ever the largest Viking ship ever found is put on display. The 36 meter long warship which carried 100 armed men is the paramount showpiece of the exhibition VIKING. Such vessels made it possible for the Vikings to rule the North Sea for centuries and move large military forces.

Power and trade
The exhibition focuses on the core period of the Viking Age, from the late 8th century to the early 11th century. However, excavations at centres of both power and trade have thrown new light on the pre-Viking period. We now know that many of the institutions of the Viking age have roots which go back far beyond the Viking raids on Lindisfarne in 793. VIKING therefore draws on material from both before and after the core period to set the developments of the Viking Age in context. At the same time thousands of new discoveries by archaeologists and energetic metal-detectorists, make it more obvious than ever that we must recognize the interconnected nature of Europe, Byzantium and the Middle East, each influencing the other.

New perceptions
VIKING will bring together a wide variety of objects from 12 European countries, including recent finds that have never been presented to the public before. The exhibition aims to show new perceptions of the Viking Age by presenting new trends in Viking research.
