Renewable Energy - Biogas Plants

Visit Programme

Renewable energy sources account for a very high percentage of power generation in Denmark. One of the most important sources of renewable energy is biomass i.e. agricultural wastes such as straw and slurry. GreenBelt Denmark will give the delegates the opportunity to visit Lemvig Bipgas Plant, which is one of the largest biogas plants in the world.

The delegates will meet the manager, and get an in-depth introduction to biogas production. Additionally, they will recieve an on-site guided tour of the biogas plant, and see how the above mentioned waste products are turned into energy.

Biogas production is, however, not only a good idea because of the energy produces, but also because of the added benefits. First of all, the environment is protected agains unnecessary CO2 emissions, secondly, organic waste is recycled and thirdly, the farmers retrieve more nutrients from the manure. In addition to this, medical wastes can also be digested and rendered harmless. This also applies for otherwise carcinogenic wastes from the medical/pharmaceutical industires.

Duration of visit:

Approx. 2 hours

Outcome

Upon visiting the bipgas plant, attendig the lecture and participating in the following discussion session, the delegates should be able to form an impression of the waste-to-energy possibilities within biogas production and learn from the Danish experiences.
