Helping Hand

Helping charities and giving back to the community is a great way for the meetings industry to do something different, but still very purposeful. There are several Danish charities which can use your help

In Denmark social responsibility is a very important topic and the Danish welfare system prides itself in being one of the most extensive in the world. In Denmark much is done to secure and help citizens, this creates a safety-net for the public, which is meant to support the Danes who are in trouble before things turn for the worse.

CSR activities are therefore, not as widely spread in Denmark as the are in other European countries.
There are however, a few organisations that could need a helping hand from volunteers.
Supporting these charities provides an opportunity for your delegates and employees to spend a day helping others in need, while at the same time experiencing Denmark and seeing how the Danish charities contribute to creating and maintaining the important safety-net in the Danish society.
It will be a great opportunity for you to show others that you are a socially responsible company being proactive instead of reactive.

Social responsibility is voluntary; it is about going above and beyond what is called for by law. It is about helping others out of freewill.
Here are a few of the Danish charities that can use your companies help:

‘Mændenes Hjem’

This is a place for homeless men of all ages. Here the homeless are offered a place to sleep as well as a free meal.
The CSR work at Maendenes Hjem could be to prepare, cook and serve dinner for the homeless, as well as other small tasks such as building projects and assisting with decorating activities.
There would be a maximum of 30 people in a group, who could do CSR activities here.

‘KFUKs Sociale Arbejde’ (KFUK Social Work)

This is an organisation that operates in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense. The aim is to organise help for homeless people, prostitutes and other ‘weak people’ in Denmark. These are often people with foreign background, such as homeless from Eastern Europe and prostitutes from Nigeria. Many of these do not speak Danish and English language skills would therefore be an advantage.

KFUK runs several places for homeless and prostitutes such as ‘Reden’ (the nest), which is a drop-in centre.

CSR activities for KFUK could be preparing, cooking and serving food as well as helping out in the kitchen. Other tasks could include small building projects and decorating. It would sometimes also simply be listening and paying attention to the people, who come for help at the different places run by KFUK.

Please note that for both places, it is very important to call well in advance in order for them to organise your trip, so your help will be put to use in the most beneficiary way possible.
They will, in some case, also charge a small fee in order to set up these CSR activities.
VisitDenmark is involved in charity work as well and we have created a charity that supports the Meeting Needs, the Events Industry charity, which we would like to offer you the opportunity to support.
Any money raised from this will go straight to the charities involved and will not be handled by VisitDenmark
