Events in Denmark 2011

In Denmark you can experience history and culture in surroundings of calming nature as well as part of a pulsating city-life. From festive carnivals, historical re-enactments, food festivals, and nights of culture to a marathon on the beach - Denmark has plenty of exciting events and festivities in the calendar to suit all tastes and ages of traveller. Below are just a few examples of what is taking place this year in the Danish capital and around the country.
Join us… in times past at Ribe Viking Market
From 30 April to 6 May, Denmark’s oldest town Ribe, will take you back 1300 years to meet the Danish Vikings, at the biggest Viking market in Denmark. Together with two to three hundred Vikings, you can experience a wealth of Viking crafts, combat displays, riding shows and much more at this unique event. 

Join us… Northern Europe’s biggest carnival in Aalborg
From 21 May and for the 29th time running, some 100.000 people will gather as the sounds of samba hits Aalborg. Participants create their costumes according to different themes and Aalborg truly turns into a magnificent wave of people, colour and happiness.
Join us… at the International Kite Flyers Meeting on Fanø
Seeing the variety and number of kites in the sky above Rindby Beach, you get the impression that the kite flyers have spent the entire winter constructing new and even more impressive kites than the year before. The sky will be full of flying kites in all sizes and colours as The Kite Festival flies off on Fanø on the Danish west coast 16-19 June.

Join us… for an extraordinary running experience
The North Sea Beach Marathon is a very special running experience, proceeding through the sandy beaches near Hvide Sande, along the west coast of Jutland. The classic marathon distance is 42.190 km, but it is also possible to run lesser distances. No matter how far you can run, you will always have the amazing view of the sea! Sunday 26 June.

Join us… when we jazz up the Capital
The 33rd annual Copenhagen Jazz Festival boasts both Danish and world renowned artists and bands. The festival takes place both indoors in clubs and venues and even more music can be heard outdoors, where scenic places such as parks and squares are transformed into jazz venues! Each year features a wealth of upcoming and established international and Danish bands and musicians. This year the event takes place 1-10 July.

Join us… for Christmas in July: World Santa Claus Congress 
Every summer since 1957 the world’s oldest amusement park, Bakken, has been invaded by Santas from around the world, gathering to spread good Christmas cheer, have fun and socialise with their peers. Apart from parading, the Santas go to the beach for their annual beach paddle. The World Santa Claus Congress will name the Santa of the Year and discuss Santa’s homeland, presents, reindeer and other work conditions. Summer-Christmas is happening 18-20 July.

Join us… for dance, music, theatre and artistry - Cultural Harbour
Copenhagen’s Cultural Harbour Festival has over the last few years become an annual highlight in the calendar. Locals and visitors alike take part in three days of dance, music, theatre, artistry and a variety of sports events. Come and have a look 5-7 August – all activities are at your disposal for free!

Join us… for Ten Days of Tasty Cooking in Copenhagen
New Nordic Cuisine is the most talked about cuisine at the moment and each year Copenhagen takes its visitors on a gastronomic journey during the Copenhagen Cooking Festival. From 19-28 August you can taste, smell and even try your own hand at the art of cooking. There will be gastronomic specialties, Danish and international, all over town – so dig in!
Join us… when we celebrate Copenhagen – Capital of Architecture & Design
Each year in September the finest of modern architecture and design become accessible to all, as Danish Architecture & Design Days is celebrated in Copenhagen. Two separate events let you experience the hot spots of Copenhagen, now booming with remarkable buildings designed by some of the world's most renowned architects. First of all there is Code 11, a new concept that embraces a selected mix of outstanding design, furniture and architecture. to be on show 1-4 September. Secondly, Copenhagen Design Week presents design that matters - ideas, concepts, products and services that will come to play an important role in our professional and private life, all presented through numerous exhibitions, seminars, and debates 1-6 September.
Join us… for an evening of cultural exploration: Night of Culture
Autumn in Copenhagen and Aarhus brings with it the unique annual event - Night of Culture - which simply can’t be missed. Dive into the cultural gems of Denmark’s two largest cities on 14 October. See and explore no less than 600 events when more than 250 museums, churches, public buildings, parks and squares open the doors for cultural experiences after dark - and this for only DKK 85/£ 9.50 in Copenhagen or DKK 100/£ 11,5 in Aarhus

Join us… when we open Skagen’s Live Christmas Calendar
1-24 December. 24 advent doors will be set up at various locations in Skagen, at the top of Jutland. Every day a beautifully decorated horse-drawn carriage will drive from the harbour to the relevant door. Three lovely ‘advent angels’ will open one door each day and the event of the day will be revealed. The events range from musical entertainment, food tastings to guided tours.

Getting to Denmark

Under two hours flying time, Denmark has an excellent selection of flights from the UK to all its major airports. With Billund and Aarhus airports served from the UK by Ryanair and Aalborg and Copenhagen by Norwegian, this means it's both easy and affordable to plan a route.

DFDS Seaways offers a regular service of overnight departures between Harwich and Esbjerg in West Jutland, with prices starting from £249, based on two people and one car travelling one way with a sea view cabin.
Getting to Copenhagen

EasyJet has daily flights to Copenhagen from Stansted and Gatwick and SAS Scandinavian Airlines offers direct flights from Aberdeen, Manchester, Birmingham, London Heathrow and Dublin. Flight time is less than two hours.
