Copenhagen is hosting the UCI Road World Championships 2011

The rainbow coloured jersey is at stake when the world's best cyclists compete for the title of the World Champion in Copenhagen from 19-25 September. To celebrate the World Championships, the city has arranged a Bicycle Festival buzzing with cultural activity.

Bike Race
From 19-25 September, Denmark will host the UCI Road World Championships 2011 in the heart of Copenhagen. The annual world championships for bicycle road racing are organised by the International Cycling Union (UCI) and consist of road races as well as individual time trials for both men and women.
The route of the individual time trials starts at the City Hall Square and runs through the old beautiful streets of Copenhagen from 19-21 September. The road races are taking place from 23-25 September on the scenic roads of Rudersdal, just north of Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Bicycle Festival
Due to the individual time trials, large parts of central Copenhagen will be closed to cars on 19-21 September. The Copenhageners have seized this opportunity to arrange the Copenhagen Bicycle Festival running from 17-25 September. During this period, the streets of Copenhagen will buzz with cultural activity including arts, food, and street parties as well as free concerts organised by the people behind the Roskilde Festival. In addition, Copenhagen city centre and Rudersdal offer bike related activities such as Pimp Your Bike, Bike Polo, Bicycle STOMP, the Danish Championships in Cargo Bike, and the official Bicycle Parade taking place on 20 September at Tietgensgade near Tivoli Gardens.

Why Copenhagen?
Copenhagen is the only city in the world to have been awarded the UCI Bike City label, a concept developed by the International Cycling Union. The UCI Bike City label is designed for internationally renowned cities that want to promote cycling (from competition to sport-for-all), as an environmentally-friendly leisure sport and an easy means of transport. Copenhagen is therefore the natural choice as host for the UCI Road World Championships 2011.

Due to the Danish capital’s fine-meshed network of cycling lanes (346 kilometres all together), eight out of ten people in Copenhagen cycle regularly and 37% of those who work or study in Copenhagen use the bicycle daily as their chosen means of transport. All in all the people of
Copenhagen cover 1.2 million kilometres by bike every day.
The Copenhagen City Bikes also make it easy for visitors to experience the city by bike. The City Bikes are free to use with a deposit of DKK 20. One of the best ways of exploring Copenhagen is by joining a guided bicycle tour allowing visitors to experience the city's bike revolution and feel the vibe of the stylish and cool capital first hand.
