Sleep with Design in Copenhagen

Winter 2010

Copenhagen is known as the Design Capital of Scandinavia. This is not just for the exclusive few. After enjoying your holiday exploring the arts and designs of this intriguing city, you can retire to your designer hotel and know there is still more to come! Just take your pick from one of these:

The Avenue Hotel
Is located just a stone's throw away from the picturesque Copenhagen Lakes and within easy reach of the Town Hall Square and Tivoli Gardens, the historic inner city with its attractive pedestrian areas.

At the Avenue, you are at first greeted in its outstanding, cosy lounge with its welcoming sandstone fireplace, comfortable sofas and carefully thought out lighting effects. Its secluded courtyard patio is quite unique for Copenhagen with its wooden deck and comfortable design creating a soothing green light from the bamboo surrounds. On warm and peaceful mornings take your breakfast tray out there or return later to relax with a refreshing drink after a busy day discovering the Danish capital. You may also want to chill-out, listen and enjoy at the “Yellow Lounge” concept, a concept already a success all over Europe and thought out by the people behind the world famous Deutsche Grammofon, with its equally famous Yellow logo. At Yellow Lounge local DJs play a mixed repertoire of, for example, Debussy, John Barry and Brian Eno – all tied artfully together with special intermezzos and creating a friendly and relaxed atmosphere…

The Avenue building itself is not new. It was built in 1898, designed by the architect Emil Blichfeldt, who is mainly known as the father of the famous main entrance to the Tivoli Gardens. The hotel has been totally renovated since 2004 in a new state of the art design, yet still maintaining the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of times gone by.

Hotel Alexandra
A superb designer boutique hotel right opposite Town Hall Square, it is indeed a unique choice for anyone interested in Danish Design. The hotel is proud to offer a feast of Danish furniture classics as well as Danish art. Try and stay at one of the four rooms dedicated to Denmark’s leading designers. Room 223 is dedicated to Arne Jacobsen, room 338 to Ole Wanscher, room 450 to Hans Wegner and room 448 to Finn Juhl. The hotel offers 61 rooms and has been awarded the Green Key certificate, for its special attention to the environment. For breakfast you can choose form a traditional Danish buffet or an organic breakfast feasts.

Hotel Fox
For the launch of the new Volkswagen Fox 21, international artists from the fields of graphic design, urban art and illustration turned Hotel Fox in central Copenhagen, into the world’s most exciting and creative lifestyle hotel. Hotel Fox offers 61 totally individual rooms, created by 21 professional artists. Each room is an individual piece of art, from wacky comical styles like a Heidi’s alpine theme, fantastic street art and Japanese Manga to simply spaced out fantasies. You will find flowers, fairytales, friendly monsters, dreaming creatures and secrets vaults. It simply has to be seen to be believed!

Scandic Front Hotel
As its name indicates, this über-cool hotel is located right on the waterfront in central Copenhagen. Just a minute’s walk from the hustle and bustle of Nyhavn restaurant and bar area. To add to its pleasures, it offers a grand view of the fabulous Opera House across the water and you are in good company as Amalienborg, the Royal Palace, is virtually next door. 132 rooms offer a very modern, selective interior design created with great imagination and flair, maybe even with a cool air of sexy decadence. In 2007, Front hotel was listed on Condé Nast Travellers Top 100 for new, hot hotels around the globe.

Nimb
Located in the most romantic place in Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens, this hotel is not just somewhere to stay but an entire experience. The 13 exquisitely designed rooms exude more a feeling of a home than a hotel. Carefully selected antique furniture, fireplaces and special atmosphere see to that. There are also other fascinating aspects of this outstanding building in the Moorish style; there is a bar, restaurants, vinoteque, delicatessen shop and an in-house dairy and chocolate factory!

The name Nimb goes back to 1877, when the Nimb family opened the first restaurant here. From then on it was for a long time the place to be seen by aristocracy and the famous and so it is yet again. The elite of Danish chefs are serving some of the best food in Copenhagen. Gourmets should book a table at Herman.

First Hotel Skt Petri
This is a truly 5-star experience in the Latin Quarter of Copenhagen. Its medieval narrow streets give this small enclave of the city a very special atmosphere. The hotel, opened in 2003, is housed in a Modernist building, previously known as the Daells department store. The only thing reminding the visitor of its previous life, are the escalators leading up to the spacious lobby. The furniture throughout has been exclusively designed for Skt. Petri, and the colour scheme is a welcoming red, white and blue. There are a total of 268 rooms including 24 suites. Some rooms have the added pleasure of private terraces, offering spectacular views over Copenhagen. This is the favourite of international stars, so look carefully as to who is going up in the lift with you.

Arp-Hansen Hotels
With Arp-Hansen you do not just get one hotel to choose from but nine and they are all in the best areas of Copenhagen. Of particular interest to the Design aficionados are: Copenhagen Island, The Square and Imperial.

Whereas the contemporary Copenhagen Island hotel has got the most spectacular views of the city’s waterfront, The Square and Imperial are lovely gems right in the heart of the city. The Square is appropriately named after its superb location on City Hall Square and just around the corner, the Imperial with its 214 rooms, has dedicated one entire floor to classical furniture and timeless design by Danish icon Borge Mogensen.

With an unparalleled signature design by Utzon and a fantastic location on a man made island in Copenhagen’s Harbour, this hotel with 326 rooms offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Ultra modern quality characterizes this hotel and its restaurant, The Harbour, offers stunning harbour views too. The Square exudes modern minimalism too, but still keeps a warm and welcoming ambience and in addition to furniture especially designed for the hotel, its lobby pays homage to maybe the greatest of Danish designers Arne Jacobsen, by offering guests and visitors the pleasure of resting in a selection of ‘Egg’ chairs. The Square offers 267 rooms. Other hotels to choose from within the Arp-Hansen brand are: The Phoenix, 71 Nyhavn, Grand Hotel, Copenhagen Strand, Hotel Opera, Wake-Up CPH and Gentofte Hotel.
