Viking Week in Scandinavia’s Oldest Town, Ribe
Experience a terrific 7 days international Viking market at Ribe VikingeCenter with craftsmen, warriors, archers, horsemen, musicians, buskers and much, much more…
1300 years ago, the market place by Ribe’s stream was a place of immense importance. The, at the time, world-known market attracted the most skilled craftsmen and artisans, who along with Vikings and other good people travelled to this spot from near and far to trade their wares. Already then, Ribe emerged as a busy market town with an atmosphere buzzing with life and activity. Denmark’s largest Viking market, 30 April – 6 May at Ribe VikingeCenter, will take you back in time to experience the authentic market atmosphere where smells of bonfires, food and horses mix with sounds of international languages and roaring Vikings. Hundreds of Viking enthusiasts from all over Europe will gather here for an entire week, many travelling thousands of kilometres to be in Ribe, the metropolis of the Viking Age.

Each year the Viking Manor house is fortunate to host guests from the old Viking area of Dorested in the Netherlands, who travel here to demonstrate their fantastic skills in carpentry and woodcarving. Other artisans live in tents on the market square, as well as in town houses dating back to 825 AD. Here, food is prepared over fireplaces and people gather around over a jug of mead. At the market you can expect lively conversations and swift trade, where the choice of wares include Norwegian soapstone, Baltic amber, Italian glass, Spanish silks and Russian slaves.

Viking Shows Several shows take place during the week demonstrating various aspects of Viking life. On Saturdays and Sundays you can experience the wild rush of warrior displays. With so many Vikings gathered, sometimes tempers run high and arguments have to be solved on the battlefield. Off to battle they go, armed with battle-axes and swords as heavy as the warriors themselves. Then, one by one the bloodthirsty men fall to the ground in this display of old-fashioned Viking battles.
Some Vikings arrive at the market on horseback. Their Icelandic horses are of the only breed to master the fifth pace, tölt.
This pace, almost like flying, is particularly handy over uneven terrain, but also for any Viking riding with a mug full of mead in hand. Along the streets you might meet the völva – Gunna the Seeress, who can answer questions about your future! Nearby, archers show off their longbow skills and will also let you have a go yourself. There are a lot more experiences to suit all ages. See the full programme on Ribe Vikingecenter's website.
This market stems from historic facts
Archaeologists have always believed Ribe played an important role in Viking age Denmark. These assumptions have been fully confirmed trough a great number of excavations. Ribe VikingeCenter, an authentic reconstruction of Viking Age Ribe, was founded in 1992. There are three Viking environments to experience here: the Market Place, dating from the early 8th century; Ribe town, dating from the year 825; and the Manor house harking back to 980 AD. Throughout the course of the Viking Age, these Viking environments developed in a way very specific to Danish culture.
