A large part of the fishing for sea trout takes place during the cold season, when the water is at something less than swimming temperatures. But modern hi-tech products compensate, so that today it is no problem to keep warm and comfortable during a long day’s fishing.

In the spring and autumn, when the water temperature ranges between 5 and 15 degrees, there is a need for warm clothing. As a minimum, a layer of insulating imitation fur between your body and the waders. The best thing, however, is a pair of 3mm neoprene waders. Then you will never have trouble keeping warm.

For regular winter fishing, you should consider 5mm thick neoprene waders – preferably with integral boots, which are warmer than loose wading shoes. Add to this a single layer of fleece or imitation fur and the cold winter is no longer a problem.

For regular summer fishing – or fishing where you have to walk more than wade – you should think of investing in a pair of modern waders of the breathable kind. They are not cheap but they offer incredible comfort if and when you have to walk a lot along the beach.
Waders – full-length wading trousers – are necessary for most trout fishing along the Danish coastline. A pair of cheap PVC waders may do, provided you cover up underneath with imitation fur or fleece. However you will quickly realise that there are now far better solutions. If you combine your breathable stocking waders with a pair of sturdy wading shoes, you can walk a long way without becoming tired or sweaty. Do not forget thermal underwear.
A short wading jacket is almost as indispensable as the waders. Short jackets prevent your pockets from getting wet if you wade in deeply. They are also produced in breathable materials so are very comfortable to wear – and they stop you sweating. The spinner can usually make do with a pair of warm fleece gloves when it gets cold. The fly-fisherman, who has to handle a wet fly-line all day, will instead go for a pair of thin neoprene gloves – preferably with a thin polypropylene inner glove to absorb condensation when the cold winter bites.
