Physical activities

Many, grown-ups and children alike, enjoy engaging in sports and games of some sort - also while on holiday. Maybe as pure recreation, maybe to improve their physical fitness, maybe to try out something new now that the holiday provides time and energy for it. So throw yourself into it – by land, by sea or in the air.

If you are among the people who prefer working out, or if you want to engage in your favourite sport while on holiday as well, the opportunities are open to you in Denmark where basically all sports and games are available.

This also means that you are in a position where you can discover new sides to yourself – who knows, maybe the holiday experience will be the introduction to a new favourite sport.

Golf, angling, cycling, adventures in nature and all kinds of water sports are important and extremely popular activites and sports in Denmark.
Diving is about freedom, about the unknown – and about life that you cannot experience elsewhere. In Denmark, you can beach dive or sail out with a small boat and dive at large depths, or you can experience fantastic night diving and wreck diving. By the way, did you know that Denmark is the country with the most wrecks per square kilometre?

Bornholm, with its rocky coast is an exciting place for diving, so is the Little Belt which offers good current diving. On Djursland, there is ample opportunity for wreck diving and underwater hunting.

Once you have tried gliding, you will never forget it. Now you are warned if you want to explore the clouds while on holiday. In the glider clubs, you can arrange for a trial lesson with an instructor.

If you are already lost to gliding and have a glider certificate, you are very welcome in the glider clubs where gliders and other equipment can be hired if you do not bring your own.

Hang gliding and paragliding
Even though Denmark is a country without high mountains, hang gliders and paragliders have very good conditions for great experiences because the wind blows almost constantly from one of the corners of the world. On Zealand, e.g. Gilbjerg Hoved, Røsnæs, Asnæs and Stevns Klint are popular flying places, on Funen, we can mention Fyns Hoved, Helnæs and Røjle Klint, and on the Jutland peninsula, e.g. Slettestrand, Lønstrup and Krik Vig.

Throwing yourself into the open air and experiencing the wind wispering and the cheeks flapping and after that the complete silence as the chute opens is a fantastic experience. Every experienced skydiver knows this.

The tandem dive is a perfect opportunity to experience the free fall and feel the adrenaline rush – without having to go through skydiving training. You receive a brief introduction, and then, you are attached to an instructor who takes you along on a dive.

Every Dane has a bicycle – at least. Denmark is a paradise for cycling. Not only for everyday and during holidays, but also when exercising. Especially in summer, many exercise cycle races are arranged and they are open to everybody to participate in.

Sjælland Rundt (Round Zealand) and Tøse-Runden (the Girl Round), which is the world’s largest exercise cycle race for women, both start and end in Køge. Nordjylland Rundt (Round Northern Jutland) takes off in Nørresundby and there are several distances to choose from. If you want to participate, you just have to remember to register.
The Danish forests are for everybody – also mountain bikers, who, however, must show consideration for the rules that apply for riding a bike in forest and nature. That having been said, there are nice and beautiful experiences ahead – some places, there are proper routes for mountain bikers, e.g. Denmarks longest mountain bike route around lake Furesø to the north of Copenhagen. Please contact the local Danish tourist offices to obtain further information.
You can plan your own trips, but you are also welcome to participate in one of the many fitness runs that are organised all over Denmark.

If you are tough and prefer the marathon distance, you can e.g. participate in the Copenhagen Marathon or the Hans Christian Andersen Marathon in Odense, which also offers half marathon and children’s marathon. The North Sea Beach Marathon along the West coast of Jutland is a beach run for the whole family with both couple marathon, half marathon as well as 10 and 5 kilometre runs. The Hærvejsmarathon is held around Viborg in connection with the big Hærvejsmarch on the old military road Hærvejen.
Wellness is pure self-spoiling – fitness, on the other hand, is hard work. However, both to a very high degree help increasing your well-being.

If you find it difficult in your everyday life to find time to be treated with ethereal oils, cleansing spas and relaxing massage – then you should consider a visit to a health resort or a real wellness-holiday in Denmark. You return home a whole new person.

Your physical fitness can be improved or maintained in one of the many fitness- and sports centres situated all over the country.

A day in nature with the gun over your shoulder is most often very profitable. Not only is it a great nature experience, there is also a large stock of game in Denmark. However, since the shooting rights are private, you either have to be invited on a hunt or rent the shooting rights on e.g. an estate in order to participate. – Trap shooting, or clay pigeon shooting, however, is possible many places in Denmark.
