Facts about Danish hotels

Denmark has some 1000 hotels ranging from luxurious to more humble hotels. This figure also includes a large number of holiday centres, where families have their own well-fitted apartment as a basis for relaxation and fun for the entire family, and you should be able to find a place to stay to your liking anywhere in Denmark!

Danish Hotels and Inns

Denmark has about 1,000 hotels, half of which are members of the Danish industry association HORESTA (Association of the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Industry in Denmark). Hotels with at least 8 rooms are given from 0 to 5 stars, classified according to objective criteria covering a number of physical facilities and services.

Although hotels that are not members of HORESTA are not classified, the standard they offer need not be inferior in any way.

Holiday Centres

A typical holiday centre has the public facilities of a hotel for the enjoyment of all the family. It offers a wide range of activities for children - the beach is generally never far away - and a restaurant or
cafeteria. Add to this the freedom of a holiday home where you can arrange the days to your family's liking. Families have their own well-fitted apartments which sleep 2 to 8 persons. Prices vary from DKK 3700-10.000 depending on size, standard and situation for a week during peak season. You make your own beds and do your own cleaning. Kitchen facilities are available for those who want to do their own cooking. You will find holiday centres throughout Denmark, usually in beautiful settings. The centres
compete in offering activity holidays - all you have to do is make your choice.

Denmark has an official star-classification of the approx. 500 hotels that are members of the Danish Hotel Industry's Central Organisation of Hotels, Horesta, and the same star principle applies to holiday centres. The classifications are based on objective criteria. An optional classification of conference facilities at hotels and holiday centres is also available

Hotel Classification

The official classification of hotels is being used only for the approx. 500 hotels that are members of the Danish hotel industry's central organisation of Hotels, HORESTA and that have more than 40 rooms. The hotels are classified with 1,2,3,4 or 5 stars on the basis of objective criteria, the most important of which are listed below. The blue-red sign on the front of the hotel show the present number of stars awarded (in yellow). Satisfactory cleaning and maintenance are basic requirements for all fice categories. A hotel without a restaurant that is classified 1-3 stars is referred to as a 'Hotel Garni'.

Classification of Holiday Centres

Mandatory classification of the houses/apartments, shared facilities and services offered by holiday centres.

The mandatory classification of houses/apartments, shared facilities and services offered by holiday centres is based upon the same principle as the hotel classification, i.e. ratins from 0 star up to 5 stars based on objective criteria. A number of requirements regarding facilities and services must be met before a holiday centre is awarded a specific star grading.

Optional classification of indoor swimming-pool facilities at holiday centres:
In addition to the mandatory classification of houses/apartments etc. holiday centres can choose to have their indoor swimming-pool facilities classified. The classification is based on a system of points, where each part of the facilities is given a certain number of points. Depending on the total score, the facilities are given between 0 and 5 stars.

Optional classification of activities and attractions for adults at holiday centres:

In addition to the mandatory classification of houses/apartments, etc. holiday centres may choose to have activities and attractions for adults classified. The classification is based on a system of points, where each activity and attraction is given a certain number of points. Depending on the total score, the facilities are given between 0 and 5 stars.

Optional classification of activities and attractions for children at holiday centres:

In addition to the mandatory classification of houses/apartments, etc. holiday centres may choose to have activities and attractions for children classified. The classification is based on a system of points, where each activity and attraction is given a certain number of points. Depending on the total score, the facilities are given between 0 and 5 stars.

Optional Classification of Conference Facilities at Hotels and Holiday Centres

Hotels and holiday centres with a classification of at least three stars can choose to have their conference facilities graded on the basis of a special set of criteria. Many hotels and holiday centres have meeting rooms available. However, the classification criteria for conference and facilities are very comprehensive and consequently the classification has only three categories: 3, 4 or 5 stars. It should be noted that hotels may offer business facilities suitable for ordinary meetings even if their conference facilities have not been classsified.
