Events for children

All year round, you can fill up your calendar with exciting musical  and theatrical experiences, sports events, festivals, markets and much more.

Throughout summer there is a multitude of music festivals in Denmark and you can bring children to these arrangements. If you go along with other people who bring children as well, it can actually be a great experience for everybody. In some places special children's concerts are arranged – e.g. the so-called “åh abe”-concerts (website in Danish only).

To ensure that the whole family get the best out of a music festival, it's useful to prepare for all eventualities, so here are a few things to remember:

- A blanket to sit on
- An umbrella or waterproof clothes – you never know what the Danish summer brings!
- Snacks if the children - or yourself - get hungry
- Suitable clothes – remember that it can get chilly at night
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Maybe some entertainment for the children, a boardgame or similar, if they find it difficult to concentrate on what happens on stage.
- Keep an eye on the children. Agree with them on what they should do if they cannot find you (e.g. provide them with a sign with their names and your mobile number).

On festivaldenmark.dk you will find a list and description of festivals in Denmark.

One of the most famous family festival is the Langeland Festival see the dates here (website in Danish only)
More and more towns now arrange annual children’s carnivals with parades, dance, play and heaps of other activities where children of all ages can have fun. There's always a party atmosphere, with lots of fun and entertainment that the children are sure to like.
There are almost 50 theatres in Denmark that put on children's theatre shows on a more or less permanent basis. In addition, there are almost as many touring children’s and puppet theatres. Teatercentrum publishes “den røde brochure” (the red leaflet) every year, with a list of all theatres for children and young people and a description of the shows. During the summer period, most of the permanent children’s theatres go on tour, so there are great opportinities to watch children’s theatre in the summer holidays. Keep an eye on the local newspaper or ask your local tourist office. And even though the performances are usually in Danish, children can still enjoy the spectacle of the shows.

One of the major children’s theatre events that is on every year, is the festival for children and young people where 90 professional children’s and youth theatres from all over Denmark show more than 150 different shows in the course of a week.
In the summer months a number of cattle shows are arranged throughout the country – both ordinary ones and cattle shows where children exhibit their own pet animals. There is rich opportunity for patting animals and there are usually also many other activities for children available.
Large and small circuses tour Denmark quite often during the summer, and if you are in an area where “cirkus kommer til byen” (circus comes to town), you probably won’t miss it since they are usually quite diligent in putting up posters.

On the homepage "Circus in Denmark” you can find a weekly updated circus calendar along with exciting stories about the different circuses on tour.
Regional plays, fantastic Viking plays, vintage car races, street entertainment, sports events, games and competitions – the possibilities are almost endless. Take a look in the local newspaper; ask at the tourist office or the local library when you reach your destination – you will almost certainly find something of interest.
