Christmas in Copenhagen

The magic of the festive season begins on Friday 16 November when the Christmas lights are switched on at Copenhagen’s famous Tivoli Gardens.

Enjoy some of the great rides and simply stroll around under the thousands of twinkling lights and heart-shaped decorations and just take in the atmosphere.

Taste some Danish seasonal treats like ‘Glogg and Aebleskiver’ - a warm red wine with raisins and spices together with a snowball-shaped fried cake served with sugar and jam.

Meet Santa Claus himself and his little helpers or try some ice-skating on the frozen Tivoli Lake. This year the Christmas fun will continue until 30 December.

You can also take a stroll along Strøget for some Christmas shopping, the pedestrian street lined with stores show-casing Danish design. With natural spruce decorations and glowing lights, Strøget looks its absolute best this time of year. At the Royal Copenhagen flagship store porcelain, silver and crystal make special presents.

At the end of Strøget, you come to Kongens Nytorv. This square has recently undergone a complete revamp and can now offer the best ice-skating rink in Denmark. Seasonal music is heard as people of all ages try their skills at skating. Skates can be hired on site, so there is no excuse not to have a go.
A Christmas Market of a different kind is to be found in Christiania. In this old Hippy commune you find wonderfully different presents. Here you will discover all kinds of crafts, elaborate candles, warm sweaters, handmade jewellery and much more. It takes place in mid December.
