Facts about "Sea Stallion"

  • At 30 metres in length, the Sea Stallion is the world’s biggest reconstruction of a Viking longship.
  • It will have a 65-strong international crew including staff from the museum and volunteers from Ireland and Denmark as well as other countries.

  • The reconstruction was carried out over four years in Roskilde at the boatyard attached to the Viking Ship Museum.

  • The shipbuilders used the same materials, tools and techniques as were used to build the original ship.

  • Around 300 oak trees were used in the construction with more than 7,000 nails, rivets and spikes.

  • It is to be sent on an expedition to the very same waters her ancestor crossed – the North and Irish Seas.

  • The purpose of the voyage is to test and document the seaworthiness, speed and manoeuvrability of the ship on the rough open sea and in coastal waters with treacherous currents.
