Are you planning or considering a "Green Meeting"? Denmark is known for it eco-friendly policies, and sustainability is an integrated part of daily life in Denmark. Copenhagen is hosting the UN Conference on Climate Change in 2009, and our meeting venues, conference centers, restaurants and other meeting service providers are focusing on offering new green products that gives you a competitive edge.

These days going ”green” is a competitive hot button and many industries are joining the green wave. This is not any different for the meetings industry. But what does it actually mean to be green? Is it about eating organic food, re-using towels, recycling garbage and using public transportation?
When you start digging into the related articles about being green you’ll find out that it is not just about the environment. Being green to us is focusing on the three elements of sustainability; environment, economics and social responsibility. Meaning that being green should not only have an environmental advantage but also a competitive advantage. We can rethink the way meetings are held and in the end save money on it.

Given Denmark’s hosting of the next major UN Climate Summit in December 2009, VisitDenmark is using this opportunity to promote green meetings internationally. VisitDenmark has united with some of the biggest partners in the global meetings industry to discuss recommendations on how to hold green meetings. This project is called "Meeting The Future" and its objective is to define and produce a globally accepted interpretation of sustainability in the meetings industry that can be used by corporations and organisations when planning meetings. What makes Denmark different? We are not claiming to be the ”greenest” destination in the world but we have for many years considered sustainability in several ways. Examples of this are:
- Environmental Taxes: The environmental taxes are high in Denmark but are given back to the industry, earmarking much of it to subsidize environmental innovation. “Danish firms are pushed away from carbon and pulled into environmental innovation” (The New York Times).
- Alternative Energy: Denmark is one of the leading countries in the world when it comes to alternative energy such as wind-, hydrogen- and water power.
- Public Transportation: In Denmark many people use public transportation or bicycle to work. This eventually affects the way the public transportation network works. Busses and the metro are on time and the Copenhagen Metro has been awarded best metro in the world.
- Cycling Culture: Almost everyone in Denmark has a bicycle they use frequently and because of the many bicycle lanes it is really safe to bicycle in Denmark. Bikes are cheap in Denmark and you can even borrow a bike for free in Copenhagen and Århus.
- Organic Food: There is an organic version of basic food in every supermarket in Denmark. Organic food is marked with the “Ø-mærke” which is authorized and controlled by the state. This prevents it from turning into a competitive tool between supermarket chains.
- Waste Management: Reuse and recycling in various forms account for 67% of all waste. The generated heat from waste incineration covers approx. 20% of district heating in Denmark. Only 7% of all waste generated in Denmark is disposed of at landfills.
- Recycling: Denmark has established deposit and return systems for a number of packaging types such as cans, bottles and plastic shopping bags, to encourage their return for reuse or recycling instead of being incinerated or landfilled.
