Christmas Comes to Tivoli and Royal Copenhagen

Tivoli Gardens and the main Royal Copenhagen store on Amagertorv are two of the most popular places in Copenhagen at holiday time.

Inaugurated in 1994, the Christmas festivities at Tivoli Gardens have fast become a holiday tradition, drawing more than 1 million visitors to the park in 2005. This year, Christmas at
Tivoli runs from Nov. 15 through Dec. 30, except Dec. 24 and 25. There’s a marvelous Christmas market selling gifts and food, the mechanical Nisser Village of traditional Danish Christmas elves is a kick for young and old, the park’s rides and restaurants are open, and at the newly renovated Tivoli Concert Hall the “Hip-Hop Nutcracker” gives a modern update to a beloved Christmas classic.

At Royal Copenhagen’s Amagertorv flagship store the beloved Christmas tables will make their return on Nov. 24 and will remain in place until the end of December. The Royal Copenhagen Christmas tables tradition began in 1963. Today, virtually everyone in town stops by at some point to see the elaborate table settings created by specially invited designers. This year’s
theme is “Christmas in the Metropolis of the World.” It will be interesting to see how the designers incorporate Royal Copenhagen’s contemporary porcelain such as the Asian-inspired Blue Palmette, introduced in 2005, and the brand-new Black Fluted Mega, Royal Copenhagen’s first-ever black service, into the mix.
