Starlight at Louisiana

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk turns its focus to motion pictures in its new autumn exhibition, “Starlight – 100 Years of Film Stills,” Oct. 13 through Feb. 25, 2007. Movie stills are great film moments captured “in the act”: the signature scene, the climactic revelation, the romantic encounter. It’s these choice, sometimes fleeting, moments that we remember – sometimes more than the film itself. We’ve seen them on movie posters, in magazines and in our mind’s eye. They do more than simply reflect the film, they evoke a mood or provoke a response. Often, these brief “frozen moments of the shutter,” shape our attitudes in ways that we might not realize. This exhibition, arranged in cooperation with the Danish Film School and the Danish Film Institute, features a remarkable collection of 500 film stills that have defined the cinematic experience and influenced the way we view the world. These snapshots through the lenses of the world’s great directors, from Orson Wells to Bille August to Quentin Tarantino, trace a history not merely of film, but of culture and mentality.
