On a map of the world, Denmark seems but a rather tiny country with its 43.098 square kilometres. In comparison to its size, Denmark has a very long coast line of approx. 7.300 km. The explanation lies in the many large and small named islands, 407 in all. Only 20% of the area is built on, while the remaining 80% is made up of agricultural areas, forests, dunes, lakes, and bogs.
Approximately 5.4 million people live in Denmark, making it the most densely populated nation in Northern Europe. Of these 5.4 million inhabitants, 1.1 million live in the metropolitan area. According to number of inhabitants, the ten largest cities are:
Copenhagen & Frederiksberg 672.218 Ã…rhus 237.551 Odense 158.163 Aalborg 121.818 Esbjerg 70.880 Randers 59.565 Horsens 51.670 Vejle 50.213 Kolding 55.596 Roskilde 45.824
Population density: 127 inhabitants per square kilometre.
