Copenhagen Opera House

January 15, 2005 saw the opening of the Copenhagen Opera house at Dokøen in the Copenhagen Harbour.

The new Opera house boasts a flexible orchestra pit even bigger than the one in Vienna, and the number of musicians will amount to 145. The rehersal room of the orchestra will be placed 13 metres below sea level. There are 6 stages plus a studio scene, and the main stage room seats 1400 guests, whereas the studio scene seats 200. The focal point of the Opera House is the large floating roof with its 32 metres long cantilever covering the four storey curved foyer, which has been adorned by Per Kirkeby, the Danish sculptor and painter and by 3 fantastic glass globes cum chandeliers by Olufur Eliasson of Icelandic origin. From the foyer there is acces to the Auditorium with seats in the stalls and three balconies. Two 17 metres wide canals has been dug on either side of the Opera House to create an island for the opera itself. On the top floor high above the foyer, a restaurant section with terrace and stunning views over the Copenhagen waterfront is one of the greatest public draws.
The Opera House is a gift to the people of Denmark from the A.P. Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller Foundation, Demark's biggest industrial group. The opera is designed by the world famous Danish architect Henning Larsen, and the interior decoration is in the hands of Danish artist Per Arnoldi.
