Gain knowledge during your holiday

There is a world of knowledge in Denmark at the scientific attractions and technical museums, and the holiday period is a great time to see and experience how some of the fantastic things we live in and surround ourselves with in everyday life have developed and function. Below, we have listed some ideas...

At the knowledge and experience centres, you will not be able to keep your hands in your pockets. The ideology behind the centres is that you through different activities sharpen your interest and learn exciting new things in a fun way. This is certainly the case at the Danfoss Universe situated on Als, where you among other things can experience everyday digital technology, play with inspiring technology and experience nature’s forces on your own body. Denmark’s Salt Centre by Mariager Fjord is full of activities related to salt - this also applies to the giant pool ”The Dead Sea” which you are welcome to jump in. At the Experimentarium in Hellerup north of Copenhagen, you can experiment with more than 300 activities divided into different themes.

If you are fond of innovations and machinery, technology and industrial history, here are some suggestions: Denmark's Technical Museum in Elsinore is loaded with planes, steam engines, cars, electrical appliances and much more. In Copenhagen, DieselHouse is something for those who like engines. The main attraction is the mammoth sized B&W diesel engine from 1932, which for more than 30 years was the largest diesel engine in the world. At the Electricity Museum in Tange, you find exhibitions on the history and development of electricity in Denmark and lots of fun try-it-yourself activities. Also the Gas museum, situated in Hobro, is a source of living history. The museum is housed in some beautiful closed-down gasworks buildings and portrays the history and impact of gas on our daily lives from then till now. Holmegaard Glassworks located close to Næstved not only tells the story of Denmark's oldest glassworks, but you can also blow and cut your own glass because it is still has a living glassworks exhibition.
Are you brave enough to touch a fish and clap a crab – or do you want to try? Then you should visit some of Denmark's aquariums where there is a wide selection of exciting things on offer. - Denmark's Aquarium in Charlottenlund north of Copenhagen has everything from plaice to beautiful tropical fish and lazy turtles. The Kattegat Centre in Grenaa also has fish and sea mammals from all over the world; the major attraction being the savage sharks. At Fjord and Belt in Kerteminde on Funen, the world's smallest whales, the porpoises, and playful seals romp around the large basins. At AQUA in Silkeborg, you find Northern Europe's largest freshwater aquarium with among other things smart otters and fierce pikes. The North Sea Oceanarium in Hirtshals provides exciting and educational experiences about what lives in - and from - the North Sea. At the oceanarium, you can see the large shoals of fish being fed by the diver and say hello to the charming sunfish.
Join us for an exploratory trip of the universe; study the firmament, the sun, the moon and the stars at IMAX Tycho Brahe Planetarium in Copenhagen. It has an IMAX cinema, where you can watch 3 dimensional films at giant screen about the wonders of nature. At Orion Planetarium in Jels, you can gaze at stars at the observatory or experience them while leaning back and relaxing during a multi media show.
Learn more about nature and its flora and fauna from e.g. the Wadden Sea Centre just outside of Ribe, which describes nature, storm surges and the culture of the marsh and the Wadden Sea. And join the centre's nature guides who can tell you about oysters, migrating birds, seals and crabs. At Skagen Odde Nature Centre you will gain a good insight into the special nature at the very top of Jutland and you can e.g. learn to polish amber and make your own herbal schnapps. NaturBornholm outside of Åkirkeby on the island of Bornholm is a nature and knowledge centre where the past meets the present. There are plenty of activities, knowledge and great stories about the nature of Bornholm.

The GeoCenter Møns Klint provides you with the unique opportunity of witnessing the making of Denmark by presenting the nearby chalk cliffs and the many fossils in a fascinating way. Together they tell the story of quite another world millions of years ago. Afterwards you can go fossil hunting in the cliffs along the coast - and who knows, you might be able to dig out yet another tooth from the killer dinosaur!

Also worth a visit is Naturama in Svendborg. Here an impressive, multimedial frame for natural history is presented in a way that is unusual for museums. In the new architectonic frames modern natural history is told by help of impressive lighting, dramatic films, sounds and pictures. A visit to Naturama is a unique experience rousing your senses in the world of the animals.

At the Steno Museum in Århus, you can gain knowledge of the development of the natural and medical sciences from antiquity till the present, study the universe at the planetarium and learn about medical herbs in the herb garden. The Geological Museum in Copenhagen explains about everything from the formation of the universe to our own development from monkey to human. Explore and hear about the Solar system and Earth and about fantastic forces of nature.
Most attractions are open throughout the year; however, the opening hours may be restricted during the winter season. Check the relevant opening hours and prices on the Internet or ask at the tourist offices.
